Topic:Water situation in Namibia-Innovative Solutions and the Role of University of Science and TechnologyPresenter
Mr Jankie Diederik Jankowitz Abstract
Water has become a serious concern in Namibia, especially in Windhoek,
over the ever deteriorating water levels in Namibia's main Dams. The
current situation is worsening due to insignificant inflow despite
recent rains the country received during the last few months. To address
this situation and ensure the conservation and good management of water
reserves in the country, innovative solutions need to be implemented.
One of these solutions is the treatment of wastewater and/or sewage
water applying available, environmental friendly biological purification
technology. This concept is to treat sewage/waste water in such a way
that the effluent quality surpasses the European (and Namibian)
standards and is suitable for irrigation, swimming pools, toilets, car
wash, mining, etc. and keep the portable water for drinking, cooking,
for medical purposes, etc. "Do we still need to live with the smell of
sewer in our towns and drink purified sewer water?" Mr Diederik
Jankowitz will take us through this innovative solution and share its
benefits for health, social and economic advantages. The presenter will
highlight the role of a University of Science and Technology where
academics and students may be actively involved in researching
alternative means to resolve issues Namibia is facing regarding water
matters. The integration of water affairs in teaching and learning as a
cross-curricula theme may advance water management and consumption
agenda.
