Abstract

This session is a follow-up of last week session "Effective Learning in Higher Education to address contemporary challenges". In this session, we will analyse opportunities where technology can effectively facilitate learning. Learning is defined as the act or process by which behavioural change, knowledge, skills, and attitudes are acquired (Boyd, Apps, & Associates, 1980). Like human beings, animals can learn but only via reflexes and behaviour modification. Humans learn through reflective thinking (Wang & King, 2006, 2007) and in the process critical and creative thinking skills are enhanced. According to John Dewey (1933), without reflective thinking learning may not occur; this means that reflective practice is the key to achieve excellence in teaching, learning and assessment. The current trend in higher education is that students are requested to reflect on their learning using technology (Darren Cambridge, 2010), e.g. ePortfolios. In this session, reflective thinking cycle will be analysed and supported by learning theories, irrespective of teaching methods used in the classroom or online environment.
