All staff and students of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), upon signing their employment contracts and registration forms, commit themselves to abide by the policies and rules of the institution. NUST therefore does not condone any form of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and cheating on tests and assessments, amongst other such practices. NUST requires students to always do their own assignments and to produce their own academic work, unless given a group assignment.

 

Academic Dishonesty includes, but is not limited to:

 

·        Using the ideas, words, works or inventions of someone else as if it is your own work.

·        Using the direct words of someone else without quotation marks, even if it is referenced.

·        Copying from writings (books, articles, webpages, other students’ assignments, etc.), published or unpublished, without referencing.

·        Syndication of a piece of work, all or part of an assignment, by a group of students, unless the assignment was a legitimate group assignment.

·        The borrowing and use of another person’s assignment, with or without their knowledge or permission.

·        Infringing copyright, including documents copied or cut and pasted from the internet.

·        Asking someone else to prepare an assignment for you or to write or sit an assessment for you, whether this is against payment or not.

·        Re-submitting work done already for another course or programme as new work, so-called self-plagiarism.

·        Bringing notes into an examination or test venue, regardless of whether the notes were used to copy or not.

·        Receiving any outside assistance in any form or shape during an examination or test.

 

All forms of academic dishonesty are viewed as misconduct under NUST Student Rules and Regulations. Students who make themselves guilty of academic dishonesty will be brought before a Disciplinary Committee and may be suspended from studying for a certain time or may be expelled. All students who are found guilty of academic dishonesty shall have an appropriate endorsement on their academic record, which will never be erased.

Course Description:

The course introduces learners to the concepts of sustainability and sustainable tourism development. The focus will cover the principles of sustainable tourism and its practical application in tourism destinations and tourism businesses as well. One of the basic goals will be to better know the theoretical and practical aspects of environmental management in the tourism sector, as well as issues related to economic and social sustainability of tourism development. Students will engage with practical planning tools and strategies for ensuring the triple bottom line with respect to economic, socio-cultural, environmental, and local communities’ sustainability through sustainable tourism management approaches and initiatives.

Aims and Objectives:

The course aims to equip students with knowledge on the principles, models, and theories of sustainable tourism development. Students will be capacitated with knowledge related to major international, national, regional, and local labels, certification programs and different types of initiatives for business, attractions, cultural heritage, protected areas, and tourism destinations in general. The course will further introduce them to the concepts of Environmental Management Systems and Sustainability Reporting as new processes that companies, and organisations are nowadays adopting.

On completion of this course, students should through assessment activities show their abilities to:

·        Analyse critically the principles, models, theories, and challenges of sustainable tourism development.

·        Discuss the linkage between tourism and sustainable development.

·         Establish and manage sustainable tourism development activities in different geographical environments.

·        Apply knowledge of sustainable development in the creation and management sustainable tourism projects.

·         Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the tourism phenomenon in the context of sustainability.

·         Distinguish appropriate tools to implement sustainable tourism policies.

Course Delivery Methods:

The instruction method is based on interactive learning that will require the active participation of the students during the lectures and discussions. The lecturer will suggest readings materials for each class and encourage students to participate in discussions.

 

 

The method of facilitating will be:

 

·        Online lectures

·        Face-to-face lectures and presentations. 

·        Case study analysis.  

·        Guest lectures, seminars and workshops conducted by subject experts from industry.

·        Reviewing and analysing of various academic journals on the subject matter.    

·        Group work on problem solving.
